Utilizing Wi-Fi on School Buses to Close the Learning Divide

Description: A session on how to leverage federal funding for school bus Wi-Fi to support remote learning and digital equity. The E-Rate program, which provides discounts for broadband and connectivity services to schools and libraries, has recently expanded to include school bus Wi-Fi hotspots and equipment as eligible expenses. In this session, two student transporters who have implemented school bus Wi-Fi in their districts will share how they applied for and received E-Rate funding, how they use the technology to extend learning time and opportunities for students, and what challenges and best practices they encountered along the way. Attendees will learn how to access E-Rate resources, how to plan and deploy school bus Wi-Fi solutions, and how to measure and demonstrate the impact of school bus Wi-Fi on student outcomes.

Description: Hear a first-hand account of how a school shooting impacted a student transportation professional and his family during the Perry High School shooting in Iowa on Jan. 4. Understand the potential threats and challenges that active killer situations pose for school bus drivers and passengers as well as the administrators who plan and oversee operations. Explore best practices and recommendations for enhancing school bus security and emergency preparedness in case of an active killer incident.
